München (German: München, pronounced [ˈmʏnçən]; Austro-Bavarian: Minga) is the capital city of Bavaria, Germany. It is located on the River Isar north of the Bavarian Alps. Munich is the third largest city in Germany, behind Berlin and Hamburg. About 1.35 million people live within the city limits. Drinking is mainly done outside in one of several large beer gardens or in one of the huge beer halls which are dotted around the city. Most of Munich's historical sights can easily be reached from Marienplatz in the heart if the city. To the south-west is Theriesenweise, home of the Oktoberfest. North West of the centre is the Olympic park where the 1972 Olympics were held and just next door are BMW World and the BMW museum. Far North you can find the Allianz Arena, home of Munich's two football teams and out in the North East is The English Garden with it's Chinese Tower and of course, beer garden. As of July 2022 there are 11 brew-pubs and quite a few brewery taps not to mention the awsome Biergartens in the summer months, always a great beer city 🍻🥨🍻
Transport ; Munich has a network of Surface trains, underground trains, trams and buses. A network map can be downloaded from www.mvv-muenchen.de. Tickets must be purchased in advance from one of the ticket machines & validated before you get on. All of the machines have the option for English. Tickets are available for short tips (up to 4 stops), single tickets/books of singles, day tickets, and 3 day tickets. If there are 2-5 of you then it is cheaper to buy a day/3day "partner" ticket. The airport is in zone 4 so you will need one of these to get to and from the city centre. All of the places listed are in the transport central zone(except Airbrau) and the nearest S-bahn / U-bahn station is listed for each.
Etiquette; If you go to a beer garden and you just want a drink, choose a table without a cloth. Those with cloths are for eating and have waitress service. At the other tables you have to, sometimes, get your own glass, then go to the bar/hut to be served and pay at the till. If you are served by a waiter/waitress it is customary to leave a small tip. Lots of tables have reserved signs on them, saying what time from. They can be used until that time or ask where you should sit. If you see a sign saying Stammtishe, this is a table reserved for regulars. Each waiter/waitress has their own tables and you should only deal with the person who first serves you. If you see a sign saying Stammtishe, this is a table reserved for regulars.
Nürnberger Bratwurst Glöckl am Dom, Frauenplatz 9, Munich, Bavaria.
Open; Daily 10am ’til late?
This place is outstanding. Just opposite the towering Dom this small pub is over 100 years old and isn’t afraid to show it. Outside there are tables and chairs but the real treat is in the dark and atmospheric interior which is a haven of tranquility off the busy Marienplatz. During the day it’s the perfect place to relax and while away an afternoon whilst evenings are busy, raucous and great for people watching. Evenings are hard to get a seat without a reservation but hang around and you might get lucky. The real treat though is the beer: Augustiner Helles, served crucially from the barrel, (wooden barrel, gravity) it is heaven. One of the greatest beers anywhere, beautifully served in this superb pub. Outstanding food, traditional German with the odd flashing of more easy going tourist fare. A lot of sausage pumps out of this kitchen but I highly recommend the Pork Knuckle. Fantastic stuff. A little gem of a place away from the hordes of tourists just a mere stones throw away from Marienplatz.
Altes Hackerhaus. Sendlinger Str 14
Open 09.00-23.00 daily.
Otto Says; Traditional Bavarian restaurant of the historic brewery, with wood-pannelled decor and classic dishes 😎 Occupying a corner location half way between Sendlinger Tor U1&2 and Marienplatz, with a row of shops occupying most of the front. There are a few tables outside the front and around the corner on Hacker Strasse. Inside, there isn't a bit of space which isn't filled with brewery memorabilia, I wouldn't like to be the cleaner. There are several separate rooms, fitted out in pine and oak. There is additional outside drinking in the courtyard at the back. This site was originally occupied by the brewery started by the Hacker's in 1738, A fire in 1825, partly destroyed the place and at this time the brewery moved elsewhere. Beware it can get quite busy at meal times.
Getränke Oase, Gabelsbergerstraße 54, Munich, Bavaria.
Open: Mo.- Fr. 9:00 - 19:00h Sa. 9:00 - 14:00h
A gorgeous boutique beer store located centrally in Munich with a neighborhood feel that stocks a nice and well-updated range of Bavarian locals, harder to find Franconians, including seasonal Bocks etc.. The staff are friendly, outgoing andgive helpful and expert advice without any pressure to buy a recommendation. Hops are hanging from the ceilings and you can hold and smell all the different aroma hop offerings, because they have them nicely on display in labeled jars. A fantastic beer buying experience.
Tap House Munich - Camba Bavaria, Rosenheimer Str. 108, Munich, Bavaria.
Open: Mon - Wed: 5:00 pm - 1:00 am Thu - Sat: 5:00 pm - 2:00 am Sun: Closed
A great tap-house located in the vicinity of the Ostbahnhof, (one of the few things that was missing in a city like Munich) with 40 taps from around the world and around 100 bottles with most of Camba Bavarias offerings and plenty of international brews. The staff are quick on their feet, very knowledgeable about the beers they serve and don’t pour the beer when it comes from the bottle (big plus!). The food is mostly beer snacks, which is fine, and the prices are also surprisingly reasonable. The first of hopefully many more to come in the Munich area!
Andechser am Dom, Frauenplatz 7
Open: Daily 10.00-23.00.
Located down a side street towards the back of the Dom. There are 3 choices where you can eat/drink. There is an open side with stand up tables, or you can sit out front. If the weather is a little cold there are blankets available for use, and inside, which is relatively small compared to some places in Munich. When we visited, one evening, there was a keg of beer on the corner, outside, from which the Helles was dispensed.
Giesinger Bräustüberl, Martin Luther Str. 2
Open: Montag bis Samstag von 10.00-23.00, Sun 10.00-22.00
New brewing site for Giesinger Bräu, situated close to Sieberhornstr on U2 line from city centre. A lovely, modern place with lots of light, looking more like a Mikkeller Bar than a Bayrisch Bierstube. The downstairs area is mostly beer benches and standing tables, upstairs is cosier, with a bright wooden décor and windows overlooking the brewhouse. Four regular beers (Hell, Dunkel, Märzen and Weissbier) plus two seasonals (Pils and a Weissbier Bock) on tap, all of average to good quality. Flights of 0,1 litre pours are available. Service is very enthusiastic about their beers and rather chatty. Recommended!
Der Pschorr – das bayerische Wirtshaus am Viktualienmarkt, . Viktualienmarkt 15
Open Mon-Sun 10:00 - 23:00.
Otto says: Beer cellar and restaurant of longtime brewery, with a rustic atmosphere and classic Bavarian dishes😜 Located at the back of the Viktualmarkt and slightly right take S/U Marienplatz 200m. The building looks like it was some sort of warehouse which used to serve the market. Inside a 50 litre barrel stands proudly on the bar. At peak times it can be changed every 20 minutes.
Hofbräuhaus München, Platzl 9
Open: Daily 10.00-23.00. S/U Marienplatz 350m
A huge place with several huge rooms and a small shop selling expensive gifts at the front. The ceiling was vaulted with ornate paintings. In one corner near the front there seemed to be a store with tiny lockers where locals could keep their Steins. There were lots of tourists who seemed to come in, have a walk round, take some photos and leave without buying anything. An Umpah band play's regularly. Service is very slow. There is a courtyard at the back for al-fresco drinking. Otto says; A 3-floor beer hall dating back to the 16th century, with a Bavarian restaurant, shows and an upbeat vibe. 👍🏻
Bräustüberl der Forschungsbrauerei, Unterhachinger Str. 76
Open: Montag bis Samstag von 11.00-23.00, Sun/hol 10.00-22.00
A family-owned craft brewery and distillery with traditional style eatery and brewpub, plus beer garden. This is the smallest brewery in Munich which many haven’t even heard of. Not a busy, bustling beer-hall like in Munich’s city-center, on the contrary: this suburban, three-room (partly in the style of the 1930’s, the time when the brewery was founded) brew-pub is quite cosy. The non-touristy atmosphere makes you feel more to sit and linger. The main attraction are the superb beers, which are served only in 1 litre Steins by one of the matronly waitresses; in summer there’s also a small beer-garden next to a local railway. The food is fairly basic Bavarian fodder. Overall a trip to Munich without a visit of the Forschungsbrauerei is rather incomplete!
True Brew Brewing Company, Dreimühlenstr 25
Open: Tues - Sun 17.00 - 23.00
It’s a good quirky place, the interior, is a good combo of modern and cosy. Reminiscent of some US brew-pubs. Tasty beer from 7 taps and few cans. Plus a good vibe inside. However they do NOT brew beer here, even though they have copper conditioning tanks etc on show (its a bluff) and they have no intention of either! The beer is brewed in Floß, near Marktredwitz. There are some tables outside on the patio. They do serve some food pizza and philly cheese-steak. Otto says; A very busy, hip new taproom well worth visiting 🍕 😜
Zum Spoeckmeier Rosenstraße 9
Open: Mon-Sun 09:00 - 24:00
Located just off Marienplatz take U/S-Bahn Marienplatz 50m. There are several tables with umbrellas located outside on the pedestrianized street. Spockmier has occupied this site since 1687. Paulaner Brewery took it over in 1928. It was bombed and burnt down in 1945, then lovingly restored in 1949/50. Inside, some of the tables are on a raised dais, there is also a further room at the back. Segmented pictures on the wall showed the art of making the biggest barrels ever and how beer used to be delivered on drays.
Otto Says: A 3-floor ale house with high wooden ceilings, known for its Bavarian menu and Weisswurst sausages. 👊🏽
Hopfenhäcker Brauerei, Weißenburger Straße 16
Open: Fri 16.00 - 20.00
Hops hacker GmbH & Co. KG is located down an alley and is next door to a Bottleshop/Café called Das Meisterstück. Get the U-Bahn to Rosenheimer Platz. A nice little brewery with an almost shady backyard. They sell their beer from what looks like their brewing rooms and they have a 2 taps and bottles. Inside has 2-3 leaner tables and the door is open into the small brewery/room with a chalkboard listing what is available on tap. Note: the back yard area is shared with Meisterstück, though this is not so obvious, so don't make the mistake and sit there and expect to be able to get a beer from the brewery tap, you are not allowed? Very friendly staff keen to show their brewery off to customers. Well worth a detour from Tap House. Otto says; quite charming and a little quirky and worthy venue! 👊🏽
Ratskeller Marienplatz 8
Open daily 10 - 24.
Otto Says: A large cellar restaurant dating from the 19th century, with classic decor and regional dishes 😊Located under the Neues Rathaus, take the U/S-Bahn Marienplatz 20m. Enter either in the middle or at the back. There are also a few tables outside. The cellar bar is rather impressive, with painted vaulted ceilings and dark wood apparent everywhere. Snob screens made it quite cosy, unlike most Munich Beer Halls which are open plan. There was also a separate room know as the Weinstube. Food is good too, but a little expensive.
Ambar Bistro, Tegernseer Landstraße 25
Open: Mon-Fri 17.00 - 23.00
Easy to get to via the centre, take the U2 from the centre and get off at Silberhornstrasse. It is also quite close to Guiesinger Brausterbl. Ambar Bistro is a tiny and cosy Italian bistro that serves mostly local Craft beers, but also some Italian brews. The food is great, simple but really great quality. Ok the choice is limited to just a few starters and mains, the staff were great and despite being rushed off their feet are happy and attentive.
Das Edelweiß, Edelweißstraße 10
Open: Tues - Fir 17.00 - 23.00 Sat - Sun 09.30 19.00
Located just a short walk from Amber Bistro, close to a couple of the U-Bahn lines. It's on the corner of a street in a nice little area, there were a number of tables and chairs on the pavement outside. Inside, it's a long rectangular bar with a clean look, simply furnished. The bar is on the right. It appears to be more set up for food but looking at the menu it was quite a small selection. Beer choice is small but well chosen with beers from Tilmans, Crew Republic and Giesinger etc... Its a nice place and worth a look in, if close by.
HopDog, Auenstraße 10
Open: Mon - Fri 17.00 - 23.00 Sat - Sun 15.00 - 22.00
Maybe the only place in Munich with fresh Franconian beer from tap, with a couple of local craft beer option. It's pretty well located, via the U6 to Goetheplatz from where you walk about 10 minutes, there are many other transport options depending of course on the direction of travel, but it's close to True Brew and Frisches so in a good area for a mini crawl. It's simple furnishings here, you enter via a door on the right side, the bar is straight ahead with a fridge off to the left and an electronic board advertising the beer options on the left hand side behind the bar. There is a good amount of seating with tables running along the front and to the left. Also some cool skeleton murals on the walls also live music. The toilets are downstairs. Also outside seating with about 4-5 tables.
Café Am Marienplatz, Marienplatz 22
S/U Marienplatz 20m
Café in the centre of Marienplatz opposite the Neues Rathaus. A convenient place to sit and watch the Marionettes dance round the clock tower. Rather expensive, but what do you expect right in the middle of the tourist area. 🤨
Victuals Market (Viktualienmarkt)
The Viktualienmarkt is a daily food market and a square in the center of Munich, Germany. The Viktualienmarkt developed from an original farmers' market to a popular market for gourmets. If you are lucky you may find the odd beer stall?
BrewsLi - Der Biermacher, Taubenstraße 2
Open: Tues - Sat 17.00 - 00.00
Located south of the Au Haidhausen and north of Giesing. Take the U2 line and Kolumbusplatz (very close to a couple of other beery locations Paulaner am Nockerherberg and Giesinger Bräustüberl). It is a nice building, quite large and modern inside with the beer kit to the left-hand side as you enter, the bar is near this front part with a large board behind detailing the beers available, as well as their own beers they also have other small Munich breweries such as Brew Mafia and Higgins Brew available. Service is friendly. There is an outside area that appears to be a newly erected (likely to have been as a result of COVID) Otto says; A great place, cosy, friendly, really cool atmosphere that you expect from a brew-pub place. I like to hunt for different beers everywhere I travel and this place has the type of vibe that definitely make me go back 😎
Schneider Bräuhaus München, Tal 7
Open: Daily 08.00 - 23.00
A restaurant belonging to the well-known wheat-beer brewery, with an extensive menu of classic dishes. Until it was bombed in 1944, this was the home of the Schneider Brewery. Now just the brewery tap remains. The front and back rooms are traditional dining rooms. The area in between comprises of an open plan kitchen and bar to the right and tall pine tables and chairs/stools to the left used mainly just for drinking. Decoration is Bavarian Style, full of wood and big tables. You can find mixed locals and tourists. Permanent crowded. Service is fine, sometimes the place is too busy and you have to wait a little bit. Beer selection from Schneider, some of them on tap, and others only available in bottle. Food is also good, basically traditional Bavarian style.
Ayinger am Platzl, Am Platzl 1A.
Open: Daily 11.00-01.00.
Located a 1-min walk from the Hofbräuhaus am Platzl. There are plenty of tables outside in the pedestrianised square. Ayinger opened this, their main Munich outlet, in 2000. Unlike in most Munich beer halls, there is seating at the bar. The wooden panels are two-tone oak and pine. A large painting next to the bar show's workers relaxing on a roof top over looking Frauenkirche. The kellerbier is very drinkable, unfiltered and smooth. They serve six different beers daily, the food is regional, down-to-earth cuisine: from original Munich white sausages to roast pork and freshly caught fish yum yum 🙃
Ayinger am Rotkreuzplatz, Wendl-Dietrich-Straße 5
Open: Daily 11.30 - 23.00
A cosy Bavarian restaurant in the heart of Neuhausen. We have always been fan's of Ayinger's beer, so alwaysa pleasure to visit. Here the food is delicious as well. I strongly recommend you make a stop here, if not for lunch or dinner, at least for a refreshing Kellerbier.
Ayinger in der Au, Mariahilfpl. 4
Open: Tues - Thurs 17.00 - 22.00 Fri - Sun 10.30 - 23.00
Located about 20mins walk from Marienplatz or 10-12 mins using bus 52 or 62. It's a large building on Mariahilfpl so it's not difficult to miss.Inside its very much traditional in style, solid wooden tables, chairs and flooring, it has a ceramic tile, 'green' covering the front facia of the bar. The staff are really good, traditional attire is also observed here, they looked really smart.
Augustiner am Dom, Frauenplatz 8
Open: Daily 10.00 - 00.00
A cosy place just by the Dom. Inside there is heavy wood furniture, it's a very Bavarian interior and a lot of space on the different floors and out the front and the backyard. The beers are the standard Augustiner selection. Service is nice comparably fast, although the place is always busy. Pricing is fairly standard for this inner city area. It’s never a wrong choice to go here, but neither are many other places nearby.
Augustiner Stammhaus, Neuhauser Str. 27
Open: Daily 11.00-00.00.
On the main drag from the Hbf to Marienplatz, take U/S Karlsplatz 200m. Otto says; The restaurant and beer hall of the historic brewery, serving Bavarian dishes in an art nouveau building, existing since 1829. The vibe and feel of this place is definitely old school München beer hall. But it's not just beer! The food is exquisite as well. Very large, classical beer hall inside with dark wooden interior and an enormous army of waiters and other staff. Efficient but slightly grumpy service.
Haidhauser Augustiner, Wörthstraße 34
Open: Daily 10.00 - 00.00
Located in the very nice Haidhausen district, only 3-4 minutes from Brunnstein Maierbrau München and therefore also close by Ostbanhof. One of several Augustiner establishments. This one occupies a corner plot, it's on the corner of Pariser Str. and Bordeauxplatz but technically it's on Worthstraße as this street continues to be the main thoroughfare to the aforementioned station. Otto says; Typical German brewery bar it's a very good place to go to in order to get a good feeling of the nice and friendly Bavarian Munich local atmosphere!
Augustiner Klosterwirt GmbH, Augustinerstraße 1
Open: Daily 09.30 - 00.00
Step into Bavaria wonderland! Traditional food, super friendly and attentive staff. You really have a taste of Oktoberfest vibes here, as they will likely seat some other guests with you if you don’t fill up your table, which was fantastic and why not?! Definitely recommend the house specialty as it's delicious. You can’t go wrong with any of the house beers. Did I mention the great atmosphere! 🤩
Augustiner Bräustuben, Landsberger Straße 19.
Open: Daily 11.00 - 00.00
Take the S-bahn Hackerbrucke 450m. Inside the room at the front was open plan with bar and kitchen in full view. Some of the tables were just plain table tops resting on wooden beer barrels. The ceiling is vaulted and appeared like it was bare brick, but may just been painted to look that way. Out the back there is a room where the brewery dray horses used to be kept, sadly now just used as a storage room. At the very back is a beer garden in an enclosed courtyard at the side of the brewery.
Sendlinger Augustiner, Alramstraße 24
Open: Wed - Fri 17.00 - 00.00 Sat -Sun 11.00 - 23.00
It's a smaller than some of the big beer halls in town, however it's still a reasonable sized place that occupies a corner plot where Daiserstrasse and Alramstrasse meet. It's about 50 minutes by foot or 23 minutes and 4 stops on the U3/U6 get off at Implerstrasse and it's a 400-500metre walk from there. It's an Augustiner place so the beer is decent in particular I would recommend the Edelstoff. It's a nice looking building from the outside, in a peachy colour with Augustiner livery. Inside its simple and adopts the classic wooden appearance with a tiled floor, the occasional mural and a creamy/light beige colour. With dividers/partitions between tables which looked wooden but were in fact a solid foam like construction, really good in these social distancing COVID-19 times! 😷
Augustiner am Platzl, Orlandostraße 5
Open: Tues - Sun 11.00 - 11.00
Super tiny Augustiner bar, overshadowed by the Hofbräuhaus, but still good, none-the-less. Great beer, fantastic service. but it is really small.
Augustinerkeller, Arnulfstr.52,
Open: Daily 10.00-1.00
Otto says, A landmark restaurant known for its large beer garden and bier-hall, serving Bavarian and international dishes. Located on the corner Zirkus-Krone-Str. take S-bahn to Hackerbrúke 280m or 500m from Hbf. On the street which runs parallel on the north side of the S-bahn lines. Enter under a gate. Ahead is a large traditional beer hall with several rooms, some of which were former ice-houses, to the right is a small beer garden and to the left is an enormous beer garden seating 5,000. Beer is served from wooden barrels. There are also stalls selling grilled mackerel and spit roasted chicken.
Gasthaus Isarthor, Kanalstraße 2
Open: Daily 10.00 - 23.00
Otto says; A traditional inn serving hearty Bavarian dishes and Augustiner beer in a classic dark wood-panelled interior. Take 17 tram the tram runs by Hauptbahnhof and Sendlinger Tor, get off at Isator and its 130mtrs away. The atmosphere is similar to a British pub, with a nice ambience, the crowd is mixed but age wise mostly 30+. The real reason to be here is the Augtiner Helles from Holzfass which is awesome. This is the reason why you need to check out this place
Haderner Augustiner, Würmtalstraße 113
Open: Tues - Sun 11.30 - 23.00
A traditional Augustiner restaurant with more than 100 years history. With these kind of restaurants you cannot go wrong. The Helles and Edelstoff are excellent. All in all a decent beer place, but nothing special as you find many similar places in Munich.
Torre Cinese (Biergarten am Chinesischen Turm), Englischer Garten 3, Schwabing.
Open: Daily 09.300 - 00.00
Located on the eastern side of the garden and not easy to spot because of all the surrounding trees. The Chinese Tower wasn't as tall as we'd expected. Surrounding it the beer garden is very busy. You go to the shed's to be served and also to pay a 1€ deposit for the glasses, then find a table and people watch! They have a regular brass band on the first floor of the tower playing traditional German music more popular music. The food is rustic Bavarian cuisine. It can easily be walked from Marienplatz.
BROY, Parkstraße 6
Open: Fri -Sat 17.00 - 21.00
A "in the hood" style brewery located behind an old house. Inside it's a working brewery with some places to sit on large bench style tables, outside in the garden there are some old chairs. Brewers were super friendly. Beers are decent, some are good (the taps are more reliable than the bottles). Otto says; a cool vibe and a fun place to hang out.👍🏻
Schiller Bräu, 23 Schillerstraße
Open: Tues - Sat 16.00 - 00.00
A modern brewpub with all the brewery equipment in plane site. The interior is quite smart and modern. It sort of doglegs off to the left after you enter, there is a table to the right of the entrance, the bar is sort of straight ahead and faces the brewing kit and then to the left hand side of the bar it goes back quite a long way and has plenty of seating. The toilets can be found downstairs and indeed you will find even more seating down here, so it is a surprisingly big place. Staff are friendly, the atmosphere is pleasant, it is not a bad place at all. They have 5 beers on tap, one of which is a seasonal (monthly rotation). All beers are drinkable, if unspectacular? They have a tasting flight of all five beers for ~5€, so that is a cool thing especially if you need ticks? 🙃
Löwenbräukeller - Das Original, Nymphenburger Straße 2 Stiglmaierplatz,
Daily 10.00-24.00. U1&U7 Stiglmaierplatz 20m
Löwenbräukeller is located in Maxvorstadt, Munich, Bavaria, Germany. It was used as a substitute site for the anniversaries of the 1923 Beer Hall Putsch, after a 1939 assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler by Georg Elser rendered the original site, the nearby Bürgerbräukeller unusable. Located on the corner of the brewery site, this pub opened in 1883 at a cost of around 400,000 marks and rather impressive it is too. It is an impressive looking building which dominates the corner of Nympenburger Str. and Dachauser Str. It looks grand, it's largely yellow in colour with green details, there is a large stone entrance with lion on the top, a turret and then it just runs back along the street, it's huge, imposing but looks great and it seems to be making quite a statement or challenge to the other big München breweries. It was seriously damaged during the war and it took until 1950 to finish the reconstruction. Another fire in 1986 destroyed the tower, banqueting hall and terrace. There was further costly renovation in 2008. Inside is traditional rustic Bavarian.Outside is a large beer garden seating up to 1,000 people. The whole are was shaded by mature Chestnut trees and blue Lowenbrau umbrellas.
Higgins Ale Works, Karlstraße 124
Open: Fri 14.00 - 19.00 Sat 13.00 - 18.00
If you like beer, you'll definitely be a fan of this place! German beer is undoubtedly good, but Higgins gives a refreshingly excellent different perspective that infuses the best of both Bavaria and America. The owners a married couple are as great as their beer. Basically they open their nano brewery that is located in a former bakery in the basement of an historic Maxvorstadt building, for you to try their beer on site, its no frills but cool. Highly recommend 😎
Frisches Bier, Thalkirchner Str. 53
Open: Tues - Sat 17.00 - 01.00
A modern little pub focusing on their own production (Tilmans). Several tables outside and relatively small interior with central bar. Sitting booths are a bit cramped. Good selection of 14 taps and 35 bottles in the fridge with prices are pretty fair for München, though, if you're there for ticks, there's a 4 beer sampler board for 9 Euros, so go for that and hit the Tilmans'! Good service, all in all, worth visiting.
die FASANERIE, Hartmannshofer Str. 20
Open: Wed - Fri 17.00 22.00 Sat -Sun 12.00 - 22.00
A grand 18th-century building offering regional and Italian dishes plus a large bucolic Biergarten, with seating for 1,500 apparently. Easy to get there via the S2 to München Untermenzing and then a 164 or 165 bus three stops to Untermenzinger Strasse and a 600metre walk from there. It's a nice place, it's in a small park. There is an area close to the main building where you will get table service, otherwise it's self service, the beers are from Hofbräu München and are very good and reasonably priced. A cool place to sit relaxing, it's well shaded, very chilled, with staff that are really friendly. A must to Biergartens in München 🙃
Hirschgarten, Hirschgarten alle 1
Open: Daily 09.00-00.00.
The Hirschgarten, formally the Königlicher Hirschgarten, is a restaurant in Munich. The restaurant is noted for its beer garden, which is the largest in Munich and probably the largest in the world. It has seating for over 8000 people. The restaurant dates back to 1791. Take any S-bahn west to Laim. Exit by the steps down, if you end up in a road tunnel, turn right, if you end up in a pedestrian/cycle tunnel, turn left. Walk up to the lights and turn right. Follow the road round to the left and turn right into Hirschgarten. Follow the path north to the beer garden. This is the largest beer garden in the world with 8,000 seats. If you sit at a table with a cloth, you will get waiter service, otherwise you have to go and get a glass from a wooden hut, wash it and take it to one of the 5 sheds to be served and then pay at the till. Some sheds only serve half litres, some just litres direct from 200 litre wooden barrels. There is a deer and goat enclosure at the side and a substantial pub for use in colder weather.
Echardinger Einkehr - Augustiner Bräu, Bad-Kreuther-Straße 8
Open: Daily 10.00 - 00.00
This typical Augustiner beer restaurant is located 5 km away from the city in Berg and not too easy to reach with public transportation U5 to/from Odeonsplatz will take 15-20 minutes, (10 min walk from closest subway station), however it is worthwhile to visit. One of the best beer restaurants in Munich. Augustiner has completely renovated the restaurant recently. Great beer selection - Edelstoff from the wooden barrel. From end of April they tap the Mai-Bock (not many Augustiner in the city do anymore). Interior, food and service are great, too.
Viktualienmarkt Beergarden, Viktualienmarkt 9
Open: Mon - Sat 10.00 - 22.00
Located in the middle of the famous Viktualienmarkt. The beers tapped here are rotating amongst the Munich breweries (Augustiner, Paulaner, Hacker-Pschorr, Löwenbräu, Hofbräu, Spaten). They also open in Winter when temperatures are amicable. Amazingly busy place, if a bit of a Tourist trap!
Paulaner am Nockherberg. Hochstraße 77
Daily 12.00 - 00.00
Otto says, a Bavarian restaurant and events venue, with an upscale dining room, rustic tavern and large beer garden. 😊 Located next to the Paulaner/Hacker Pschorr brewery, and can be reached via a bridge over the busy road adjacent (Am Nockherberg) or U1/2 Koluimbusplatz. There is a large beer garden at the front known as Salvator Keller. It get busy at times as there are turnstiles allowing you access to the bars where the Hell is dispensed from wooden barrels. Inside there are four large copper tanks, who knows if they are for show or actually in use? Everything inside is new, as a fire in 1999 destroyed everything.
Paulaner's Wirtshaus & Biergarten, Arabellastraße 6
Daily 12.00-00.00
Take tram 16 or 17 which run from Karlsplatz stop just a few hundred metres away. It's in a slightly strange location hemmed in between the rear of the Westin Grand Hotel and Richard Strauss Strasse. It's not a Biergarten in the traditional sense, it abuts the rear of the hotel and for all I know it might be connected/part of the hotel. There are some trees for shade but much of the seating is on block pavers with the hotel looming over the Biergarten. Paulaner provide the beer and it is very good and extremely reasonably priced. The food range is traditional and prices not cheap but on a par with others. It's okay, I wouldn't make a special effort to visit but if you happened to be passing then it's fine but as Biergartens go there are much, much better ones to choose from IMO.
Paulaner Bräuhaus, Kapuzinerplatz 5
Daily 11.30-00.00.
Otto Says; The beer hall of the brewery, with dining rooms serving Bavarian dishes, plus a large beer garden. 😜 Leave the U3&U6 Goetheplatz station and walk along Häberlstraße or Kapuzinerstasse and where the two streets meet you'll find quite an impressive building. Thomasbrau built this tower brewery in 1892. In 1928 Thomasbrau and Paulaner merged and brewing ceased at this site. In 1989 Paulaner decided to resume brewing at Kapuzinerplatz along with an extensive refurbishment. They must have certainly broke the bank when doing the refurbishment as everything is tip top. The shiny coppers are in the main room. At the back there is a smaller room, which is also a library and outside through the back door or archway from the street is a beer garden. Some of the tables are waitress served and some are self-service.
Gaststätte "Zum Brünnstein", Elsässer Str. 36
Open: Daily 10.00 - 23.00
This is a small town experience a short walk from the Munich Ost train station. A medium sized place, more like a restaurant than a bar, with lots of local people (always a good sign). The food is traditional German beer food. large and delicious main courses. As you enter the bar/serving area is straight ahead with seating off to both the left and right, it's a single room horizontal layout. Wooden flooring, wooden panelling, big drapey curtains at the far end.
Hofbräukeller, Innere Wiener Str. 19,
Open: Daily 10:00 - 23:00.
A classic Bavarian restaurant in neo-Renaissance building, with large beer garden and Hofbräuhaus beer. A large beer garden with equally impressive beer hall with multiple rooms. Upstairs is also in use and there is a dance club in the cellar. The building originates from 1892 and the brewery used to be next door. There was a serious fire in 1987 and the brewery moved around this time. A much more relaxing place to enjoy the Hofbrau beers than Hofbrauhaus. Outside the building is painted a strange green colour. (1 mile from Paulaner am Nockherberg U4 & U5 Max Weber Platz.)
Bufet - Bier & Wurst, Dachauer Str. 7A
Open: Mon -Sat 18.00 - 01.00
Pleasant modern little place near the Hauptbahnhof, a good place to know. Looks kind of like any craft beer bar really. Inside it's a small'ish' place, the bar is at the rear with the large shiny metal beer tanks (3) all under the counter behind glass/perspex. The beer is very good and relatively inexpensive. It has a nice atmosphere. Otto says; simple format, nice sausages and super fresh helles, swift service, fair prices, what’s not to like🙃
Kaisergarten, Kaiserstraße 34
Open: Mon - Fri 12.00 - 00.00 Sat - Sun 10.00 - 00.00
A great location and atmosphere. One of the best Schnitzel in Munich. the food overall is very good. Nice outter patio very quiet, with a more upscale atmosphere. Ayinger beers on tap, decent service.
Unionsbräu (Wirtshaus Unions Bräu Haidhausen) Einsteinstr. 46
Open - M-S 11.00-00.00, Sun 10.00-16.00.
This place was taken over by Lowenbrau in the 1920's, but in 1991, production resumed at this site. The ground floor is more of an up market restaurant. We chose to use the cellar and sat at a long , bare pine table which ran from front to back. The brew kit is at the back along with a collection of old wooden barrels. A chalk board and bags of grain proved that it was actually in use. A glass roof in the middle let in plenty of daylight. Take U4 & U5 Max Weber Platz
Erdinger Bar & Biergarten, Terminalstraße West Terminal 1 - Ebene 03 - Modul C
Open: Daily 08.00 - 20.00
Located landside just inside Terminal 2, the Erdinger bar is a circular bar surrounded by open plan seating both high and low. There are no walls per say, you can walk in and out on either side with a waist high barrier around the seating area, as such you don’t come here to relax in the same manner as Airbrau, it’s all hustle and bustle, people rushing past etc. There’s a few TV screens dotted about (as you’d expect from the Sportsbar naming) showing live football. There’s about 10 beers up for grabs here, roughly an even split between tap and bottle. Largely Erdinger offerings plus a few Fischer numbers. Prices are OK for Munich, especially for an airport, not as good as Airbrau. OK place for a few ticks, in fact not bad for an airport.
Airbräu, Terminalstraße Munich Airport Center - Ebene 03
Open: Daily 08.00-23.00
A tavern and brewery serving Bavarian beers and traditional local dishes, with a beer garden. The mock beer garden in the central atrium at the top of the S-bahn steps with medium sized trees growing in large tubs to create the desired effect and to shelter you from the sun coming through the glass roof. The beers here are unfiltered. Inside there was a private function room with oak panelling. The rest of the room was surrounded by large glass panes looking out on to terminal 1. The brew kit can be plainly seen in the middle towards the back. The only toilets available are inside terminal 1.
Wirtshaus am Hart, Sudetendeutschestraße 40
Open; Daily 11.00 - 23.00
A great place for roast pork, schnitzel and dumplings, plus Bavarian beer, in a rustic tavern with a shaded garden. Easy to get there take the U2 U-Bahn stop at Am Hart is just a 5 minute walk from there. It's a really nice place with a Biergarten area that is quite large and well shaded. The beer choice is Löwenbrau and Franziskaner. The staff are very friendly, it's a great find in an area without many other options.
Wirtshaus im Braunauer Hof am Isartor, Frauenstraße 40/42
Open: Mon - Sat 11.00 - 23.00
Located only a 7-8 minute walk from Marianplatz. To the left side of the building is an opening which leads to a lovely small Biergarten at the rear, it has shade from 4-5 pink flowering Horse Chestnut trees but is also a lovely little suntrap. The beers are from Paulaner. The staff are very friendly and service is quick. Inside is traditionl Bavarion cosy and welcoming.
Wirtshaus In Sendling, Albert-Roßhaupter-Straße 61
Open: Tues - Sun 10.300 - 23.00
A nice Typical down-to-earth Wirtshaus, serving a range of very good Bavarian food and a decent array of Munich beers on tap.
Flugwerk, Sonnenstraße 2, Feldkirchen.
Open: Daily 10.00 - 01.00.
On leaving the S-bahn (S2 to Feldkirchen) station take the left fork opposite, which is Sonnenstrasse. The brew-pub is built in an old distillery at the far end of the street. Outside look's more like a French house than a German brew-pub. Inside there are several rooms and the brewery can be seen behind glass on the left hand side. Further conditioning tanks are downstairs near the toilets. The back room is less formal with high tables and chairs and there is a beer garden at the rear with a bi-plane in the corner. In fact the aeroplane theme was prevalent throughout with model planes hung from the ceiling and old propellers etc. dotted around the place. I think Hofbrau have a keen interest in this place as the beer mats and menu holders came from there too?
Marktschänke Forschungsbrauerei, Frauenstraße 10
Open: (Possibly Closed Now?)
Located in a building on the south side of the market, not one of the market stalls. The market is worth visiting during day (closed in evenings) as several beer stalls, one in particular doing obscure brewery bottles. They do a tray of six of their beers, all in 100 ml servings, which is a delight for a ticker in Munich. Well worth a stop. I think this is really just a brewery tap more than a brewpub, either way it saves you traveling out of the city for the same beers.
Hacker-Pschorr Bräu GmbH, Ohlmüllerstraße 42
Open: Mon - Fri 08.00 - 17.00
Brewery tasting room and shop, typical German service, good beers though. 🙄
Hacker-Pschorr Bavaria Bräu, Theresienhöhe 7
Open (Possibly Closed Now?)
Opened in 2005 at the North end of the Oktoberfest gardens. The actual brew kit can be seen down in the cellar. Consisting of a beer garden for 2000 and inside there are several rooms with a total capacity of over 1000 and a terrace for 800. A recent addition in 2010 is the B7 Sports Bar & Lounge showing Bundesleague, Formula 1, Premier League and lots more. There is also a trattoria serving pizza and pasta.
