Schanzenbräu Schankwirtschaft, Adam-Klein-Strasse 27, Nuremberg, Bavaria.
Hours: from 11:30 daily
Not easy to find, but when there you will forget everything. It's a pub/restaurant for the Schanzenbräu brewery, although they brew larger quantities at other breweries, their own brewery is not very big. It looks like a Student Kneipe, or a gathering place for the more alternative crowd, but is in fact visited by all sorts of people. The beers are very good, especially the Rotbier which is a sort of Nuremberg specialty. Food is both traditional and different, so can be a nice change. Friendly service, nice biergarten in the back. Easily reached by U-Bahn line 1.
Bierwerk Charakterbierbar, Unschlittplatz 9, 90403 Nuremberg
Open: Mon-Sat 6pm to midnight or even later? Closed Sunday
An excellent beer bar in a quiet part of the old town. A modern bright wooden interior decked out with quirky memorabilia, a long bar with plenty of taps, some self-serve ones as well! Plus entertainment some nights? Quite a pleasant atmosphere. The policy for the twelve taps is a changing selection of 4 local, 4 regional, and 4 international beers. This included 2 beers from their own brewery (which is based elsewhere in Nuremberg). The bottle selection is also impressive with lots of breweries (such as Brewbaker). The bar is busy but the service is good and quick.
Nürnberger Altstadthof, Bergstrassse 19, 90403 Nurnberg-Sebgald
Daily 11.00 – 01.00: Transport; Bus no 4 Tiergartnertor or DB Nurnberg Hauptbahnhof.
This is the farthest brew pub from the railway station and was the one we headed for first so as to be sure not to miss it? Has we have heard good reviews of the beers. Here we go a bit of history Hausbrauerei Altstadhof was the first of the new wave breweries to open in Germany back in 1984. It was originally owned by Neumarkter Lammsbrau could now be independent? The brewery, together with a small distillery plus a couple of other bars, stands behind the pub. The Black Farmer is a small, single-roomed bar with seating for around 30ish people located in one of Nuremberg's oldest buildings. Food is available, although the menu is limited but looked quite good. We sampled the full range of beers and found them very quaffable indeed but we were only in town for a few hours and had quite a few places we wanted to see and bier to sample

Altes Sudhaus (Tucher), Am Alten Sudhaus 4
Open: Tours by prior arrangement only Monday to Friday?
The old brewhouse is located in the center of a new residential district "Nordstadtgärten" between Nordring and Burg.
It was built in 1895 by the renowned Nuremberg architect Hans Müller, who was also responsible for Schießhaus and Deutsche Hof.
The Nuremberg Tucher brewery, which belongs to the Radeberger Group, took over the brewery as early as 1966, letting it go for a long time and now brings it up to speed: when the renovation work was completed in 2018, beer is brewed and can be tasted here again, such as the Nuremberg red beer, that you should definitely try. Beer tastings and group tours are by appointment only.
Eppelein & Friends, Feldgasse 43, 90489 Nuremberg.

A new "microbrewery" if not even "nano-brewery" that produces modern style biers.
Barfueser, Hallplatz 2, 90402 Nurnberg-Lorenz
Daily 11.00 – 1.00; Transport; U u1 and u11 Lorenzkirch. DB Nurnberg Hbf
Our last and probably the best stop of that day was the most excellent subterranean brewpub near the Hauptbahnhof. It's in the cellar of a massive rennaissance stone building that has one of the largest roofs I've ever seen. The first of the Barfusser (meaning barefoot) chain; the others are in Heilbronn, Ulm and Neu-Ulm. One very large, vaulted bar, is kitted out in beer hall style, long pine tables, red flagged floor etc. Slightly disconcerting is the collection of British pub signs hanging from the ceiling, also a couple of smaller rooms to the side. The brewing equipment is prominent on the right, opposite the bar and kitchen. On our visit on a mid week afternoon it was quite busy, but the staff were very friendly and helped find t-shirts to fit! We tried the full range of beer and all were quite good. In fine weather there is a large terrace at the front on Konigstrasse. Any way time and the train wait for no man so we had to wave a found farewell to Nurnberg.
Café Express; Bulmann Stasse 4, 90459, Nurnberg-Sudstadt.
Mon-Fri 11.00-0.100, Sat 12.00-01.00, Sun 15.00-01.00
Modern café bar south of the
Hauptbahnhof – exit the station from the western subway the opposite end to the old town. A Bohemianfeel to this place, an eclectic assortment of furniture and a bright yellow bar counter. It
always has 4 different local beers on draught and a good bottled
selection. The single L-shaped room features a raised section at one end and a dart board at the other plus patio doors that open onto the street in summer. The locals are really chatty and friendly and the bar staff are the most friendliest we have encountered on our travels in Germany! There is also frequent live music. We loved the vibe in this place and stayed for hours.
Café Bar Wanderer & Bieramt, Beim Tiergärtnertor 2
Open: Daily 10am - 11:30pm
This is probably the best place to have a beer in Nürnberg! Inside is squat and narrow, with a chalkboard that tells you what is available or new. There is also a small bottle fridge near the entrance, you can also sit outside on the cobbled area under the tree's, in one of the best spot in Nürnberg (under Tiergärtentor and in front of Dürerhaus). A great atmosphere and the locals show passion about their beer and seem knowledgeable which is why we love this part of Germany. Good muzak too which gets louder as one gets intoxicated! A great bar weening youngsters onto great beers away from mass advertised junk while at same time making the elders feel younger! The owner has written a book with details of 289 Franconian breweries that is available for purchase at the bar. Plus they have free WiFi but you have to ask for the password. You should definitely if in Nürnberg!

A good place to go in Nurembeg if interested in craft beer. Located on a back street in the Altstadt. Inside its mainly one room and a bar, dimly lit and a eclectic selection of furniture that makes it very cosy. It's associated with NBG brewery, so you may find several of their beers on tap. A wide bottle selection 100+, ranging from German classics to trendy American crafts. Nice knowledgeable service, with a good ambiance and a cool vibe in this little hidden gem of pub.

The Country Beer Paradise originated in 1986 as a drinks market. These people are real specialists in traditional Franconian beer. The pub sells beers from 15 small breweries. From each brewery there is one draught beer from an oak barrel that changes constantly and others all from the bottle. There is a chain of 3 or 4 pubs and a beer shop. In 1994 the company opened this pub on the corner of Brunhildstrasse. Since then, two more have opened in Nurnberg, along with franchised pubs in both Nurnberg and Furth. The pub itself is on two levels and furnished in a very basic style, not that this is likely to put off the average beer geek!
Landbierparadies; Rothenburger Strasse 26, 90443 Nurnberg-Gostenhof.
Mon-Thurs 17.30-0.100 Fri 14.00-01.00, Sat 12.00-01.00, Sun & Hols 10.00-01.00.
The second of the Landbierparadies pubs, this branch opened in 1996. The other two Nurnberg pubs are at Galvinstrasse 10 and Sterzingerstrasse 4, with the Furth franchise at Friedrich-Ebertstrasse 100. All have the same opening hours except Sterzingerstrasse which opens at 11.00 on Sunday. Slightly cosier than the Wodanstrasse branch, though to be honest that’s no great achievement.
Landbierparadies, Galgenhofstrasse 60
Open: Mon-Fri 9.00-19.00, Sat 9.00-17.00, Sunday - Closed
Located a bit outside the centre, about 15 minutes walk from the main train station. In a kind of a storage depot? It's totally one of the best specializing bottle shop's out there, in this case, it's all about Franconian Biers. An insane selection, rare robtier, marzens, st.anna festive beer and so on..{quite a lot to keep tickers busy}. Quite cheap on the local beers. Nice decoration with hops and lots of Steins and some old copper brewing equipment.
Note: They have a good webshop to get the harder to find German beers. Fast service, good shipping.
Lederer Kulturbrauerei Sielstrasse 12, 90429 Nurnberg-Gostenhof.

Brewpub in part of what used to be the Lederer brewery (which was closed by Tucher). this pub is a shrine to all things Lederer with a steam engine and four brewing coppers the most notable of the countless artefacts. The beers are brewed in Furth. The pub has the largest beer garden in town with seating for over 1,000.
Singularis Porcus, Harsdorfferstrasse 8
Open: Daily 5pm - 11pm or later?
A fantastic little hidden gem of a pub, located outside of the old city (a tram ride). A really good selection of Franconian beers from small breweries. A fantastic beergarten. A very cool place. They have a rotating landbeer from 14 different landbreweries plus their normal stock. Food is not the main thing here for sure, but they do have food.
Kater Murr, Johannesgasse 14

A new modern bar, located just outside of the centre, inside there is a long bar, with pine bar stools, then more pine tables and chaires, bright modern paintings hang on the wall's. They have a good selection of new Franconian craft beers, as well as classics on tap. Friendly and nice service. Well worth a visit.
Schlenkerla Schranke Beim Tiergartnertor 3, 90403 Nurnberg-Sebald.
Closed Sun; Mon-Sat 1.00-23.00: Transport, Bus no 4 Tiergartnertor or DB Nurnberg Hauptbahnhof
Another beery pub just down the road from the Altstadhof. Bamberg's Schlenkerla (Heller) brewery gave them the right to use their name. This small pub, dating from 1500, stands below the Tiergartnertor, close to the castle and across the street from Albrecht Durer’s house. Capacity increases substantially in fine weather when around 50 tables appear outside. They have their own butchers and serve the finest Nurnberger Rostbratwurst. The five regular draught beers are occasionally supplemented by a guest.

Open; Mon-Sat 10.30-24.00, Sun & Hols 11.00-15.00. Transport, U u1 & u11 Weisser Turm.
Hotel, restaurant and wine bar in the south-western part of the old town. Wine is favoured over beer, but there are nevertheless a couple of interesting beers available. The rambling restaurant has several different rooms, one or two featuring some lovely wood panelling. Good food is served and is appreciated by the mostly mature clientele. The small Weinstube next to the hotel entrance opens at 10.. Monday to Saturday.
Restauration Kopernikus - Biergarten & Restaurant, Hintere Insel Schütt 34
Open: Mon-Sat 1700-2400, Sun1200-2400 Biergarten: in summer 1200-2400, weather permitting?
Hard to find but worth the effort, located in the city center, in the Cracow Tower (restaurant) and on top of the (rebuilt) historic city wall. If that alone is not enough to convince you, let me tell you that the selection of mostly Franconian beers is not huge, but quite decent, and includes several good beers on tap (Spalter Zweickel, Krug Lager, and Hetzelsdorfer Vollbier, to name a few). The food is hearty (Polish and Franconian dishes) and portions are generous. Try to visit during summer, when the beer garden is open - the atmosphere is lovely and there are more beers to choose from than in the restaurant.… Grand views looking back at the city of the castle to the right and church towers to the left.
Tucher-Brau am Opernhause; Am Kartausertor 1, 90402 Nurnberg-Lorenz.
Open Daily 100.00-24.00. Transport, U U2 & 21 Opernhaus.
Possibly not the official tap, but it’ll do. This characterful pub stands alongside the city wall opposite the Opera House, between the German National Museum and the German Transport Museum. Full of bric-a-brac, it’s seemingly Christmas all year round. There is one main room with an annex to the side and a beer garden at the rear which overlooks the old town’s dry moat. The menu includes some Balkan specialities.
Hexenhäusle, Vestnertorgraben 4
Open: Mon-Sat 11am-11pm Sun 11am-9pm
A nice little "hut" behind the castle with a very small interior, that is very traditional, lots of wooden beam's and booths with plush red seating, but a very large and nice biergarten where you can have a few beers and some excellent traditional food. The outside is comfortable and has a nice atmosphere. Great for chilling out in afternoon with a few biers. It could use more of a beer selection but a great place. One of our favourite places to chillout with a few beer and friends.
Zum Gulden Stern; Zirkelschmiedsgasse 26, 90402 Nürnberg.
The world´s oldest Bratwurstkueche (they claim). They sell Bratwurst the traditional Nuremberg way by the pair. The pub has been around since at least 1420? The interior is very rustic. You can’t go wrong then spend a couple of hours in here soaking up the atmosphere and having a nice Dunkels Bier with a wurst, mmmm and with 3 Regular draught beers from the Tucher brewery your can’t go wrong.
R&W Bierspezialitäten Nürnberg GmbH, Äußere Laufer Gasse 6
Open: Mon-Sat 10am-8pm, Sunday - Closed
A nice shop with an incredible variety of biers but also very expensive. The advice is very knowledgeable. You can tell that the operator is a trained beer sommelier. If you want to broaden your (beer) horizon, this shop should be warmly recommended. The beer seminars are very recommendable: casual, pleasant atmosphere and you get in a discreet way a lot of knowledge and completely new insights into the beer world.
Balkon, Koenigstor 2
Open: Bei schönem Wetter täglich von 12:00 bis 24:00 Uhr
Mostly open air bar conveniently located right next to the train station. They have a small variety of Franconian biers on tap, most interesting among them a Nikl. Makes for a good place to have a last beer in the sunshine before you have to leave town. No food but you can get the food at the back restaurant and bring it in here .. good if good weather :)
Bierwerk, Unschlittpl. 9, Nürnberg
Open: Daily 18.00 - 02.00 Closed Sunday
A nicely detailed beer bar for the beer lover/explorer. Not only with a large choice of beers they also serve a few beer infused cocktails for the not so big beer drinkers. The bartender is very knowledgeable and ready to help you with your choice. The best thing is that they don't have the standard beers but mostly high quality small brewers from near and far. Overall: A huge variety of craft beers (bottled and on-tap). Recomended place for beer lovers!
Bratwurst Röslein, Rathausplatz 6
Open: Daily 10.30am - 11.30pm
Apparently a classic place to get the Nürnberger Rostbratwürste. Looks touristic to me, even looking at the menu. There were some locals drinking their beer (Tucher...) as well, though. The Rostbratwürste were prepared on point, whereas the Gulasch they make out of them was not spicy enough? A decent place to have lunch, though there surely must be less touristic options. Bonus point for the Kristallweizen on tap which has become a very rare style in Bavaria.
Remember;
Craft beer is an adventure, it does not matter when you start, just as long as you explore it!

Andechser im Deutschem Kaiser, Konigstrasse 55, Nurnber-Lorenz
CLOSED NO A BURGER JOINT!
Transport; U u1 and u11 Lorenzkirch. DB Nurnberg Hbf
Our second bier hall of choice and maybe it was the wrong choice! was one of a chain of Andechs brewery taps in major Bavarian cities, this one is in the bar of the Deutscher Kaiser Hotel, opposite Barfusser (see bleow). The brewery’s entire range of beers is usually available on draught. The long, narrow bar is furnished in typical bier-hall style, with wood prominent and a vaulted ceiling. We had a meal her eventually as the staff left a lot to be desired and even then we don’t think we got what we ordered. A typical tourist trap and the beers were only just average. There is limited seating outside. Any way you can't have good beer all the time without supping the occasional decidedly average one!
