Let’s start with a little bit of history and set the scene for our latest Polish Beer adventure. Like a mini-state all to itself, Gdańsk has a unique feel that sets it apart from the other cities in Poland. Centuries of maritime ebb and flow as a port city; streets of distinctively un-Polish architecture influenced by a united nations of wealthy merchants who shaped the city’s past; the to-ing and fro-ing of Danzig/Gdańsk between Teutonic Prussia and Slavic Poland; and the destruction of WWII have all bequeathed this grand old dame a special atmosphere that millions of tourists now come to enjoy.
And those visitors are coming in ever greater numbers to wander the narrow, cobbled streets of the Main Town, to gaze in wonder at monster red-brick churches, to scatter along its historical thoroughfares lined with grand, elegantly slender buildings and to wander in and out of characterful cafes, amber shops and intriguing museums. Tourism hasn’t turned its back on the water, with pleasure-boat cruises upriver and a wealth of maritime history to view in between brews at dockside beer gardens.
Though an old city with a tumultuous past, and the historic scars to prove it, 21st-century Gdańsk is an energetic place and one that's investing in its tourism future. With the best transport links in the north, it’s also an ideal launch pad for much of the Polish Baltic coast and many other inland attractions.
How to get from Gdansk Airport to Gdansk? Public transport – Bus (Gdansk)
The bus is the cheapest travel option available out there. Bus line 210 of ZTM Gdansk takes 40 minutes to get from Gdansk Airport (Port Lotniczy) to the main railway station of Gdansk (Dworzec Glówny). Because the bus leaves in two directions you must be careful to take bus line 210 in the right direction, which is the direction of Goscinna. Bus line 210 departs every 30 minutes on weekdays and every 60 minutes on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. A ticket costs 3.00 PLN and is available from the ticket machine (automat biletowy) at the Gdansk Airport bus stop. The price of a ticket allowing you to travel up to 60 minutes, changes included, costs 3.60 PLN. It is possible to travel to and from the city 24 hours per day, with bus line N3 operating between the airport and Gdansk at night. Bus line 122 of ZTM Gdansk runs once an hour between the airport and railway station Sopot Kamienny Potok SKM, travel time is 40 minutes. Bus line 4a of ZTM Gdynia runs only a few times a day between the airport and railway station Gdynia Glowna PKP.
So there you go, as normal I will start with the Brewpub’s, and Gdansk has four (6) of them at the moment (June 2022)
PUB Browar Spółdzielczy, al. Grunwaldzka 190
This Brewpub/multi-tap 22 taps! But being a beer geek is not required. In a nice location off the main drag. The opening hours are tricky? it’s open from Thursday till Sunday! (check the website) The prices are probably the highest in the City? Some beers that do not sell fast (because of the price) tend to be on tap long enough for them not to resemble their original taste! The interior is tight and separated into small rooms which sometimes makes finding a place to sit difficult. Apart from that I highly recommend this pub. This is THE place to go if you want good beer in Gdansk.
Brovarnia Gdańsk,ul. Szafarnia 9.
A nice brewpub just across the river from the old town in the corner of a basement restaurant space in a Gdansk hotel. Their beers aren’t too bad, they offer a pilsner, wheat beer and a Schwarz. atmosphere is fine. Nice brew equipment is also on show. Above average food and friendly staff. Worth a peek if you’re in town
Nowy Browar Gdański, Jana Kilińskiego 7E
Probably the best small brewery in Poland for sure in the Tricirty. The restaurant is located in an the old factory with an industrial feel, you can feel the history and amazing vibes. The stainless steel brew kit is prominent and there is lots of seating. Only draw back for me is the wall of a dozen huge TVs! (WHY?) The the restaurant serves good food especially the breakfast. Anyway highly recommend a visit.
Browar PG4, Podwale Grodzkie 4
Open:Sat-Thu 12:00-00:00, Fri 12:00-02:00
Just a few steps from the train station and unsuspectingly located in a swanky hotel, part of the Craft Beer Central Hotel this place is a huge modern bar on two floors. . Cleanly designed, this is a pleasant place to hang out. 5 taps, flights available of 5 for 25 PLN. Beers are competently done, but nothing is a standout. Not especially worth a trip unless you have time and need the ticks.
Piwnica Rajców, Dlugi Targ 44
Open: Fr-Sat 12-24; Sun-Th 12-23
Bar located just beside Neptune’s Fountain, in a cellar, a huge place with lots of seatings, arched celings and the brewkit and fermenting tanks are on show, food is of the gastro pub style. If you want to serve you own beer, just buy a card (like a credit card) and you can decide yourself how much of each beer? Beers are served in good condition. They do a tasting flight with 6 beers. The staff are friendly and happy to help. Would definitely recommend this place!
Browar Vrest, Słowackiego 23 (Garnizon Kultury), Wrzeszcz
Open: Daily 09.00 - 00.00
Located a short walk from PUB Browar Spóldzielczy and Glaciarna, and in a beautiful residential area of Gdansk, with a large grassy area outside Its a big modern brewpub with modern fittings, also a roof terrace, the big copper brew lit is on show. They have 5 beers on tap, low-ish to average quality, but most drinkable. Nice and fast service. Didn't eat, but the menu looked good.
Now for some multi-tap pus and bars;
Pułapka, Straganiarska 2.
Maybe the best multitap pub in Gdańsk? Pułapka is Polish for "trap" and as you walk in, you will see why but don’t worry; a fairly small to medium sized bar (sometimes overcrowded, not much space, is the only disadvantage). Great selection (of Polish and imported beers), reasonable prices. Very friendly and knowledgeable staff, Wifi available. During the summer seating is also available outside. Cool vibe in this place, a must visit in Gdansk.
Labeerynt Craft Beer Pub, Szeroka 97.
Located in the Old Town in Gdańsk, the bar itself is based at basement level so one flight of stairs going down await you on arriving, it also had a good supply of outside seating as well in the summer. The staff are friendly and efficient, WIFI available, to taste many kind of excellence beers. Selection is large, cool ambiance with good music and nice service, I recommend this place for every gourmet beers make sure to factor this place in when in Gdansk.
Lawendowa 8, Lawendowa 8
Open: Mon-Wed 18.00-01.00, Thu 18.00-2.00, Fri-Sat 18.00-03.00, Sun 18.00-01.00
This is really a lovely little gem of a pub. Located in the back streets of the old town in Gdansk (15 minutes walk from train station), also due to the proximity, definitely combine a visit to Pułapka with Lawendowa 8 (or L8 as its known for short) This place offers plenty of seating both inside and has some outside seats in summer that provide a beautiful and unexpected view of st. Mary’s church. Minimal brickwork interior, endearingly divey, with as much seating as this place can handle also looks like there is a stage here which may get used for live music from time to time. They have 14 taps, with a pretty interesting selection, plus 2 fridges full of beer. Very friendly staff and the wifi is good. Pretty much everything you'd want. Overall a must visit on a Gdansk bar crawl.
Cafe Lamus , Lawendowa 8.
This place offers 2 bars with plenty of seating both inside and some outside seats in summer, raw brick wall interior. A nice selection of sixteen taps and quite a few bottles, looks like there is a stage here which may get used for live music from time to time? WIFI is available. The staff are friendly and efficient, overall worth a visit on a Gdansk bar crawl, due to proximity, definitely combine a visit to Pułapka with Lawendowa 8.
A magical place and unusual place, where you can taste fine beers from remote corners of the world from nine taps and some bottles. Located in the center. Yet known only to the initiated. Between Podwale Old Town, ul. and Kowalska ul. Well worth seeking out.
Labeerynt, Szeroka 97, Gdańsk.
A Great chill out beer pub with a small beergarden. The staff are very relaxed and with No attitude! Great selection of 10 taps and many many bottles.
Polskie Kino, Szeroka 97
Open: Daily 15.00 - 01.00
Directly next to Labeerynt and has a few decent beers on tap. The latter is certainly superior, but this is worth a look due to the different beers on tap. Friendly, English-speaking bartender. Nice little place.
Bruderschaft, Długa 81/83
A perfect place for all lovers of special atmosphere. Bruderschaft is located in the heart of the old part of Gdańsk at ul. Długa. Bruderschaft started operating in 2012. Since then lots of jazz, blues, funk and rock concerts were organised there. These days, in Bruder concerts are cyclical events and it’s worth showing up every Wednesday evening on time to listen to some live jazz music.
Graciarnia, Dmowskiego 15
Open: Sun-Thu 15-23, Fri-Sat 15-2
A very small cosy cellar bar in Wrzeszcz. As the name would imply, this is a place where people come to play tabletop games, so you need to get lucky or come early as most of the few tables will be occupied, but there are cosy chairs and couches to relax in with a good Polish beer. They only have 6 beers on draught here, but the fridge is full of bottles with some surprise's. Friendly, English-speaking staff as well. Cool place to play some games and drink some beer.
Under beer, Ul. Garbary 6
Open: Daily 14.00-23.00
Several fridges hold a massive selection of Polish beers. More than enough to keep you going for quite some time. Being Poland they were all dirt cheep by UK standards. The staff are very friendly and helpful and the atmosphere is good. A must visit if you’re in town and want to try Polish craft beer which is surprisingly good incidentally.
Pub Spółdzielnia, Abrahama 7
Open: Mon-Wed 14-24, Thu 14-1, Fri-Sat 14-2, Sun 18-24
A bit of a walk from other bars, located in abasement, with several rooms, outside seatings as well. A very good beer selection coupled with a very cozy interior. every couch and every table seems to be different. Well worth a look in.
Pub Polufka, Leczkowa 18.
Located in the centre of Wrzeszcz in dorm camp at Gdańsk University of Technology. They offer an array of nearly 50 kinds of beer mostly form Ukraine and Czech Republic. Here you can buy typical eastern appetizers like smoked squid stripes or kirieshki – dried bread. Polufka is a cosy place, good for meeting with a pack of friends. You can watch important sport events on TV spend time playing board games (free to use) or table football (on tournament tables!) might be wise to book a table on busy nights.
Pub u Szkota, Chlebnicka 9/12.
Probably the cosiest and nicest bar in the town, with cool people, music and great atmosphere! A small selection of local beers. Great to sit back and chill in.
Old Gdansk Beer Pub & Caffe, Piwna 56/57.
Live music and a small range of craft beers on tap but mostly on bottle. Worth a visit if you are passing, as the place has a good vibe.
Gdansk has quite a lot of bottle shops, but here are the best two;
Smak, Czerwony Dwór 17A.
Very nice shop owned by a wholesale beer distributor. Probably the best prices in Tri-city for Polish craft (especially the ones the wholesale distributes). New additions always showing up on Facebook. Unfortunately, the American beers are overpriced comparing to what they should be. The staff are very friendly but don’t always knows everything about their selection.
sklepzpiwem.pl, Burzynskiego 9.
It is a small space so it is a bit cramped up with all those beers, as the selection is very nice and the store is full of beers. Great international beer selection and a lot of good Polish craft. The staff are very beer wise and very helpful. They tend to get sold out of the best stuff very soon after they arrive, though reserving a beer is possible. Their Facebook profile is updated with their beer availability.
R.I.P.
Browar Piwna, Piwna 50/51 Sadly Closed 2021
This comfy brewpub in central Gdansk is located one street down from the main tourist street in the old town. The beer was relatively impressive, three taps and a six bottles available and ideally would be expanded however cannot fault anything else about the place. Excellent attentive service, food very good, prices are fine, nice atmosphere. If you’re in Gdansk (it’s an interesting town) you should find time to visit here to try their beers.
Browar Trójmiejski Lubrow, Karmelicka 1 Sadly Closed 2020
This Brewpub is very easy to find when you go by train. When you get out of the central station. It is on the other side of the crowded highway. You have to go underground. This is the brewpub with the largest selection of beers available in Gdansk. Five beers on tap and also some bottles available. You can get small tasting glasses if you like. A spacious industrial interior that looks a bit like a night club mixed with a restaurant. The brew kit is in the main room upstairs. It is also possible to sit outside. Nice friendly staff and decent food.
Degustatornia Piwa - Degu, Grodzka 16
CLOSED 26/01/2020
An Interesting location, not far from the old town and city centre in a side street close to the river. A definite gem and very different to the multiple almost identikit street bars which are prolific in Gdansk. They have 10 beers on tap an unrivaled selection of mainly Polish bottled beers including a number of quality stouts. Knowledgeable friendly staff make this well worth a visit.
Soul Kitchen International, Węglarska 1, Gdańsk
CLOSED 17/03/2017
Soul Kitchen was a wonderful experience offering a variety of healthy, but very tasty meal choices at an extremely affordable rate. If you are visiting Gdasnk, definitely give Soul Kitchen a try if you are looking for a casual place to just grab some great food and they have 4 craft beers on tap as well.
Cathead Multitap, Powroźnicza 19/20
CLOSED 15/08/2021
Located at the edge of the Old Town and well-worth visiting - the patio has an absolutely beautiful view of the river. They have 28 taps but NO flights and absolutely no free samples. The prices are okay, basically Western level. Service varied a little bit from arrogant to service minded. Only large pours so not that exiting for tickers. Live music. A must see when in Gdansk.
Maverick, Partyzantów 8, Quattro Towers
CLOSED 22/02/2022
Within walking distance from other bars and the station in Wrzeszcz. A clean and bright wood & grey brick décor with an open kitchen and lots of single tables to sit at. 16 taps & friendly staff, now and then they do tap take overs.
